Professor Zana Akpagu yesterday assumed office as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar.
By this feat, Akpagu is the 10th person to assume the office of vice-chancellor of the institution since it was established in 1975.
He was the immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration and succeeds Professor James Epoke, who had completed his single term of five years. Akpagu was presented to the academic community by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University Governing Council. Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.
In his inaugural speech at the university’s Senate Chambers yesterday, Akpagu, said he would pay attention to the Information Communication Technology, welfare of students and staff as well consolidate on the gains recorded by the immediate past administration in the area of infrastructure.
Akpagu said academic excellence and discipline in all fields would be his driving force in an attempt to take the citadel of learning to greater heights.
He said he would emphasise the improvement of the institution’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). He said in order to actualise his administration’s plan to develop the institution’s human resource, there would henceforth be an aggressive internally generated revenue drive in the school.
Speaking on the achievement of his predecessor, Akpagu said: “You have also made giant strides in restoring academic excellence in this institution. I must say that I am justifiably proud to be part of that achievement.”
