LAGOS URGES PARENTS TO CREATE AWARENESS ON CHILD’S RIGHT LAW

Lagos State Government has urged parents and caregivers to create more awareness on the contents of the child’s rights law in order to safeguard the children against all forms of abuse and violence.

The State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, who gave the urge recently at the Year 2015 World Human Rights Day celebration,  affirmed that the present administration is committed to continue to uphold the rights of every child.

He noted that this year’s theme, “Empowering the Nigerian Child” has been carefully selected to create awareness on the rights of the child, restore their confidence and self-esteem, improve their status as well as empower children with disability to fully enjoy their rights.

The Attorney-General, who was represented by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Funlola Odunlami said that, the theme reflects the idea that children are precious assets and sources of joy not only to their parents and immediate families but to the entire society.

He advised that, it is important for all parents, guardians and caregivers to painstakingly care for and nurture children in order to develop their potentials so that they can contribute to the development of the State.

Kazeem said, some of the efforts by the State to ensure that every child is protected and given equal opportunity include the establishment of Homes and Clinics for the physically challenged children and the setting up of a Domestic Violence Response Team to provide supports to victims of abuse, among others.

He added that, an essential aspect of the duties of the Ministry is to ensure the promotion, protection and fulfillment of human rights in the delivery of justice services in Lagos, stressing that this has over the years been achieved through the activities of the Directorates for Citizen’s Rights and Office of the Public Defender.
